In 2021 Cobar Shire Council completed stage one of the restoration works to the Great Cobar Museum to preserve the historical building and bring it back to its former glory. In addition to those works new exhibitions were also installed.

Stage 3 upgrades will include creating an underground mining experience which is a major part of the museum masterplan. The project will include digital view scope boardwalk, walkways through landscapes and historic mine site ruins, an interactive and educational underground mining experiences, and a unique open-air multipurpose amphitheatre. These upgrades will further enhance the visitor experience and will offer education towards mining and the important role it has played in Cobar over the years.
